International Inspirational Speech and Evaluation Area contest 2020

Hi Fellow toastmasters and friends,

It is our pleasure to invite you all to Toastmasters International Inspirational Speech and Evaluation Area contest 2020 in Tampere, Finland.

The Theme of this contest is ” The 2020 decade of Sustainability.

The world is aging, the globe is warming, it its time for all of us to take our part on saving our planet.

According to Wikipedia, the fashion industry is one of the major polluting industries in the world. The production and distribution of the crops, fibers, and garments used in fashion all contribute to differing forms of environmental pollution, including water, air, and soil pollution. The textile industry is the second greatest polluter of local freshwater in the world. Some of the main factors that contribute to this industrial caused pollution are the vast overproduction of fashion items, the use of synthetic fibers, and the agriculture pollution of fashion crops.

As consumers worldwide buy more clothes, the growing market for cheap items and new styles is taking a toll on the environment. On average, people bought 60% more garments in 2014 than they did in 2000. Fashion production makes up 10% of humanity’s carbon emissions, dries up water sources, and pollutes rivers and streams.

What’s more, 85% of all textiles go to the dump each year. And washing some types of clothes sends thousands of bits of plastic into the ocean, which can harm habitats and the environment.

By reusing clothing, less cotton or other materials are needed to be produced, resulting in fewer insecticides being sprayed.

So, we encourage you to bring at least one or more of your preloved clothes to exchange with your other fellow toastmasters or donate it to Red Cross Finland (Kontti) or Armejanpelatus.
